What is Travelling Riverside?

Travelling Riverside is a site designed for Daragh Henchy to promote the blues. It started 20 years ago when he got his first guitar and learned a Robert Johnson shuffle. Since then Daragh has been travelling the world and playing music. This site is a collection of those experiences, and the people who share the passion for Blues music that Daragh has played with

California 1992

A summer spent busking on the pier at Santa Cruz in 1992, while in the US during a summer holidays from university. Hours picking on an old guitar on the wharf and up in the Scotts Valley hills

Manchester 1990 -1993

Daragh spent 3 years in Manchester oblivious to the burgeoning Indie and Rave scene, as he sought out gigs at iconic venue 'Band on the Wall'. All the while, armed with a Tanglewood guitar upgrade, he continued on the Blues path, discovering the influences behind Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jerry Donoghue, Peter Frampton, Chris Rea, Gary Moore, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy

Bavaria 1994

The next accidental destination was southern Germany, in the Alps. Daragh played in a bavarian hard rock band until the drummer was busted, a first real rawknroll experience. A short musical liaison with a US country and western singer followed before returning to the road again

Taiwan 1996 - 1999

The musical highlights of Taiwan were, playing chinese music on national radio during chinese new year (Wang Chuan Fung was the tune), and meeting Michael Mistrot, a fellow musician, from the US, with whom music was written and performed.

Australia 2000 - 2007

Highlights from time spent on these shores were opening for INXS and Diesel at the Austereo Xmas party in 2005, playing live on occasions at parties and discovering John Morris and the Blues Preachers, and for the first time getting lessons, and discovering whole new blues avenues through Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightening Hopkins, Son House and Robert Johnson

Paris 2008 - 2010

The Travelling Seine-side combination was known as Blunk n' Madelaide, and performed in Montmartre 'dans les caves'.

Sydney 2010 - 2012

Back to Sydney in 2010, reunited with teacher, John Morris, and a chance street encounter with a Tin Can, led to 'The Bronze Wailers' and other musical connections.

The Bronze Wailers A Blues duo, sometimes trio, playing the cause of Delta and Chicago blues
Gospel Blues and Spirituals Rediscovering the musical of Gospel Blues and Spirituals
Irish and Celtic Stirring the pot of golden tunes from the homeland
Jazz Another dynamic trio, Ed on Sax and Mel on vocals, playing Jazzy blues, or is it bluesy jazz?
